Canine And Feline Obesity 1st Edition

This book provides veterinary surgeons with a global perspective on obesity in dogs and cats. Moreover, the information and therapeutic strategies presented within can help ensure that pet owners become fully involved in improving the health of their pets.

Obesity is a disease that has been described since prehistoric times (e.g. Venus de Willendorf). Hippocrates (5th century BC) recognised the relationship between obesity and sudden death and infertility, and identified the pillars of treatment: diet and exercise. By the 2nd century, Galen had already differentiated between overweight and morbid obesity and had proposed a treatment based on running and a diet of bulky, non-nutritious foods. In his book The Canon of Medicine, Avicenna (Ibn Sina, 900–1000 AD) described the comorbidities of obesity as well as a corresponding treatment based on four pillars. In this book we attempt to provide veterinary students and professionals with simple explanations about one of the most prevalent diseases of pets, from its origins in the growth stage to adulthood, focusing also on the yo-yo or rebound effect. The book constitutes a small contribution to the effort to increase awareness about a growing problem. It is a debt we owe our four-‐ legged friends in return for their unconditional love.
